Brief description: Low square chair with two adjoining back rests and widely woven thong seat. Square posts with carved legs. Left post with four discs down front and side panels; rear panel with diamond shapes terminating in a heraldic knot. Right post with five discs down front and side; rear with vertical row of narrow cartouches. Center post undecorated. Finials missing. Back rests with high-relief central disc with radiating spokes surrounded by circle with spokes and circle of zigzags. Four pointed bars projecting from behind motif. Kamdesh, Nuristan.

Measurements: H. 73 cm W. 47 x 48 cm

Condition: Worn, finials missing, thongs dried and broken in right corner

Brief description: Chair of honor with two adjoining back rests. Carved posts with turned legs, section holding backrests square, topped by turned finials. All three posts carved on all sides with various disc and horn motifs. Tightly meshed thong seat. Both back rests with central spoked discs flanked by vertical intertwined horn motifs. Similar design on both back panels. Kamdesh, Nuristan.

Brief description: Chair of honor with two adjoining back rests, with loosely meshed hide rope seat. All four legs turned. Middle sections of posts square and carved with two sets of superimposed V-shaped horns. Ornate finials of cluster of two, three and four quivers (dandaku) on round bases. Left arm rest curved lower than right backrest. Both surfaces carved with three vertical bands of spoked discs separated by three vertical lines enclosing zigzags. Both backs with two sets of V-shaped horns. Probably from Waigal, Nuristan.

Brief description: Heavy solid wood mortar, with vertical trapezoidal handles. Surface is carved with horizontal bands of repeated linear designs, base with petal motifs. Lid with two sharp indentations for lifting. Round motif with star-like points on surface of lid. Nuristan.

Brief description: Large bulbous blackened wood pitcher on splayed foot. Handle with stylized ram’s horns and looped circle of thin twisted branch for hanging. Long spout with linear decorations, handle under spout. Body of pitcher decorated with raised discs interspaced by linear designs. Nuristan.

Brief description: Bow harp with figure-8 resonating chamber covered in tautly bound goatskin. Bow passes through center of skin, secured at both ends to resonating chamber by strips of hide. Four nylon strings stretch across bow. Kamdesh, Nuristan.

Brief description: Tripod table stand from Waigal valley. Two straight and two undulating bars of twisted iron forming each leg (bashpei), all four bars terminating in single flat bar. Undulating bars meet in center of a round flat disc which supports the wooden dish. Dish is secured by flat metal clasps hooked over rim of dish (prolongations of legs). Small metal loops at top of legs. Nuristan.

Brief description: Large round bowl for storing bread with high fitted lid of equal size, both halves having six small square knobs around outer rims for handling. Side surfaces lightly incised in concentric circles and bands of Xs and vertical lines. Top of lid carved in concentric circles of geometric and linear designs around central floral disc. Nuristan.
