The very first detailed sketch of the 53 m statue at Bamiyan was done on the spot by the Indian artist Bhairon Bux, assistant to Dr. Charles Owen, who was with Captain Maitland in Bamiyan. His sketch formed the basis for a more ‘spectacular’ sketch by William Simpson, which was even more ‘elaborated’ by the engraver at the ILN.

A composition of three engravings, based on sketches taken in Bamiyan by Captain Maitland in November 1885. On Maitland’s original sketch the heap of debris of the remains of the giant seated Buddha is recognizable; on the ILN engraving it looks more like an isolated hillock detached from the cliff.
