Engraving of a portrait of the Russian Ambassador T. Zinovieff, based on a photograph. On Sept. 6, 1887 the Times published a telegram from St. Petersburg, that today the protocol of the final settlement of the Afghan Frontier delimitation had been signed by Sir West Ridgeway and M. Zinovieff, and also an account of the negotiations at St. Petersburg which led up to it.

It is rather questionable, whether it was really the pillar No. 53, which was sketched by Simpson, as at the time when he left the ABC in February 1885, the delimitation had not yet reached this point in the flat khol (steppe) between Maimana and Andkhoi. In addition, there are no mountains in close distance to pillar 53. Most probably the sketch shows one of the pillars west of Bala Murghab (Nos. 28 to 34), with the Band-e Turkestan Mountains in the background. The caption on the original sketch lets guess that it was done after Simpson’s return to London from his imagination on request of the ILN. Engraving based on a sketch by William Simpson.
