|AEE 183-1| Das aus in der unmittelbaren Umgebung verfügbaren Material errichtete Dorf verschmilzt mit der Landschaft. Typisch für die Wehrbauten der Pashtunen sind die runden Türme der qal’as. ♦♦♦ A cluster of residential compounds, built of pakhsa on stone foundations merge with the landscape. One qal’a has a pair of circular watchtowers with lookouts on the upper level. The small openings near the apex of the paksha walls enabled observation and, if needed, allowed the occupants to fire down at possible intruders or foes.

|AEE 185-1| Die bala hissar von Gardez von SW gesehen. Die imposante, weiss gekalkte Festungsmauer leuchtet von der langgezogenen Kuppe des Burghügels. An ihrem rechten Ende wird sie von der Ruine einer Zitadelle überragt. Am Fuss des Hügels liegen einige Lehmhäuser. ♦♦♦ The imposing, whitewashed defensive walls of the bala hissar of Gardez viewed from the SW, built on a natural ridge. At its eastern end the ruins of an earlier structure are visible.
