  • [Parliamentary Blue Papers]: Afghanistan No. 7 (1879), p. 29 in a letter to Viscount Cranbrook, Secretary of State for India, dated 7 July 1879: "The force operating on the Khyber line was commanded by General Sir Samuel Browne, whose instructions were to capture Ali Musjid, expel the Amir's garrisons from the Khyber, and occupy Lundi Kotal, Dakka, or such other point as might be found most convenient at the head of the Pass, thus threatening Jallalabad, but not advancing further."
