Schinasi (2017): Kabul – a history 1773-1948, p. 141: “[…]Menar-e Esteqlal stood in an esplanade facing the principal entrance to the royal palace and was visible from afar to those arriving from India. […] Three sculptures with great symbolic meaning were placed around the base of the column each on a stone plinth, and symbolized the victory. On the north side, a warrior stood with a double-edged sword in hand and another one on the south side; on the eastern side a lion in chains symbolized Afghanistan enslaved; and on the west stood a container of flowers. These statues were sculpted by the Austrian Farago whose works already adorned the royal palace gardens of the arg and who provided other sculptures for the new royal gardens of Paghman. The statues on the independence column were removed before the end of Amanullah Khan’s reign and sometime in the 1930s were replaced by four canons. […]”
