ER 125 — Moderne Eisen-Brücke in Darunta

Aufnahme der Hängebrücke über den Kabul-Fluss in Darunta, erstellt 1908-09. Die Aufnahme ist zur selben Zeit entstanden, wie diejenige in der Serie Souvenir d’Afghanistan (SdA 3-167) und zeigt die Brücke vom gegenüberliegenden Nord-Ufer aus.

The first iron bridge in Afghanistan over the Kabul River at Darunta, constructed in 1908-09.

It has a span of 396 feet between the towers, and is ten feet wide. The bridge, which was constructed by Burn and Company, of Howrah, India, takes the place of a primitive ferry-boat made of skins stretched on a framework of timber.”

It is reached at 7 ½ miles from Jalalabad and on the left bank of the Kabul river stands the old Darunta fort mentioned in the preceding article. A steel suspension bridge built by Messrs. Burn & Co., Howrah, and completed early in 1909 spans the gorge near this point. The bridge is 306 feet long, with a 10 feet roadway and is constructed to carry a load of 120 lbs. per square foot.”
