In order to get a better access by car to his residencies and hunting grounds, Habibullah Khan ordered the construction of paved roads. The first ones led to Paghman, Istalif, Jabal us-Seraj, and Jalalabad. The driving times in hours and minutes were recorded in siraj al-tawarikh. Some parts of these hand-paved roads were still in surprisingly good condition in 2002.
