ER 248 — Transportproblem: Gebirge

Bis in die Zeit des Zweiten Weltkriegs schränkten zwei natürliche Gegebenheiten die Verkehrs- und Handels-Verbindungen innerhalb Afghanistans ein: einerseits die hohen Gebirgspässe über den Hindukusch, anderseits die besonders im Frühjahr reissenden Flüsse. Blick von der Passhöhe des Khawak-Passes auf eine kleine Karawane beladener Lasttiere, die durch den tiefen Schnee auf der Nordseite des Passes ins Andarab-Tal absteigt.

Up to the Second World War, there were two main difficulties for the traffic and commerce in Afghanistan: on the one hand the high passes over the Hindukush and on the other hand the torrential rivers in the springtime. A view from the summit of the Khawak Pass on a group of loaded animals descending through the snow on the northern side of the pass, down to the Andarab Valley.
