AHI 01 — Entering British India at Jamrud

|AHI 01-1|

As in the Album the very first photograph is missing, it is replaced here by a copy of a photograph, taken at Jamrud, showing the arrival of Amir Habibullah Khan. On the way from the landau to the railway train, the ground is covered with carpets. The Amir is hidden behind the Afghan officer in front of him, walking between two British officers (one of them is most probably Major Sir Arthur Henry McMahon, KCIE, CSI, his official host for the whole journey through India) behind him a group of high ranking Afghans, among them Mhd Asef Khan and Mhd Yusof Khan.

  • Diary of Colonel Sir Henry McMahon (1907), p. 19: “We arrived at Jamrud at about 1 o’clock, and the Amir at once made for his railway carriage. I showed him over it, and he expressed great satisfaction, saying it was the first time he had seen a railway train.”
  • Seraj ul-Akhbar (1294/1915), Vol. 5, No. 20, p. 5: this photograph.
  • R.D. McChesney; M.M. Khorrami [Eds.] (2016): The history of Afghanistan, Fayz Muhammad Katib Hazarah’s Siraj al-tawarikh, Vol. 4, Part 4, p. 1125: “On Thursday, the eighteenth of Ziqa’dah / 3 January 1907, His Majesty, his servants, and the rest of the party were taken by carriage to the rail station at Jamrud where food and drink had been prepared, “all that souls could desire and all that eyes could delight in,” and for two hours they stopped there in perfect nobility. After partaking of the food and drink and enjoying tea and coffee, His Majesty travelled by private rail car with his festivity-loving personal staff to the station in Peshawar, which was built and maintained one mile from the city.
