AEE 005 — Die Mittags-Kanone 'top'

|AEE 005-1|

♦♦♦
On top of the western spur of the koh-e sher darwaza stands a former fortified bastion. Up to 1979, one of the two old guns standing here was fired every day exactly at noon to indicate the correct prayer time to the people up to 1979.

  • N.H. Dupree (1977): An historical guide to Afghanistan, p. 89: “Two old cannon which used to boom forth at twelve noon every day sit on a high promontory above the gardens. A motorable road to the cannon runs up behind the walls enclosing Babur’s Gardens, but it is hazardous and one should proceed with caution, preferably in a small car. The view, once arrived, is magnificent. The guns were manufactured in the mashin-khana (armory and factories) established by Amir Abdur Rahman on April 7th, 1887. The tin roof of the mashin-khana, still functioning, may be seen by the side of the Kabul River, looking east towards the center of the town.” (see AEE 005-4 and AEE 005-5)
