A square, two-storied military building with loopholes and pitch-noses on all sides, standing on the northern promontory of the hillock Tapa Maranjan (called Siah Sang at that time). The only access to the building is a ladder leading to the first floor.

Panorama. In the centre of the right photograph is the massive construction of the so-called ‘Fort Roberts’ constructed by the British troops on top of Tapa Maranjan (at that time also called Siah Sang), just opposite to the Bala Hissar, which can be seen in the middle of the left photograph. The two panorama photographs RE 074 and 075 were taken close by.

A general view of the so-called Bala Borj (upper tower) from SW. This fortification was constructed on top of the remains of a Buddhist stupa on the crest of the mountain Koh-e Sher Darwaza, marked with A on the General Plan. Another building stands on the right side of the towerlike fortification.
